It seems Everly has changed considerably over the last 2 weeks. She's spending much more time awake, lifting her head and looking around. She's also started smiling (she's smiled at mom, dad, Grandma and Nana in the last week) and almost turned from her front to her back on the change table yesterday. Fussy times aren't quite as consistent or as long, but she is certainly most happy when she's being held. She's still sleeping in the bed with me, but we're going to start getting serious about getting her into her crib over the next week or two. She's still waking every 2-3 hours to feed at night.
At 6 weeks, Everly weighs 11 lbs 6 oz! She's getting rollie pollie - so much so I found rashes in her leg rolls! I'm now paying more attention to those areas during bath time!

Kelsey's hospital stay
Recently, Kelsey contracted E coli. We don't know where she got it, but it could have been the petting zoo at Queen's Park, or anywhere. She ran a fever for 2 days, and the diarrhea started the next day. She had major cramps with the pooping (1-4 poops an hour), would not eat, and couldn't sleep. We took her to the horpital on the first night because she couldn't sleep and we were worried about dehydration. They sent us home and said let it run its course. We took her to our family doc the next day who basically said the same thing. And the following day she was so lethargic, dehydrated and still pooping, we took her back to the hospital who admitted her, started her on fluids and ran some tests. Thank goodness! I had spent the last 2 days feeling that she had something more than a stomach virus, and was so worried that Everly was going to catch whatever Kelsey had. It was a reief to know someone was going to help us!
The staff and nurses in Pediatrics at SMH were so great. They were so terrific and caring with Kelsey - special stuffies for her to take home, any toy she wanted to play with, any movie she wanted to watch, popsicles, bubbles to distract her from the needle pokes, stickers, funny stories and songs! We felt very much at home, and although Kelsey felt so awful, I'm not sure she'll remember the hospital visit as a negative experience because she was treated so wonderfully there.
Eventually after what seemed like an eternity, the pooping has slowed and turned back to normal and the cramps are gone. She's still got a couple more blood tests to take (there was some concern about her kidneys after a urine sample containing blood and proteins), but after 10 days it looks like this illness has run it's course and that she's going to be OK. Not an experience I'd like to repeat. All I can say is WASH YOUR HANDS ALL THE TIME!

4 weeks old already
Well, they say time flies, especially when you're in survival mode. Life at the Cressey house is certainly busy. Time for sitting still and sleeping well has gone with the arrival of our new bundle of joy.
Everly still sleeps for much of the time, but over the last week, she has become more alert and is staying awake for longer periods of time frequently throughout the day. She is still fussy between 9PM-12AM, and although I was quick to lable her colicy, I think it's just her fussy time. Some evenings are worse than others, and we definately get frustrated (this is supposed to be our time to sit and relax :)). But when we stop to think about it, things could be worse.
She enjoys being held and cuddled (and lets you know she doesn't want to be alone when you try to put her down) and she still won't settle in her bassinet at night. So, Jim's still on the couch and I'm in the bed with Everly. As much as I didn't want to do this (and feel bad for Jim), the more I talk to people, this seems to be a common survival tactic for many moms (especially moms of 2 kids). In a few more weeks, we'll start letting her cry more and see if we can't get her into her own room.
I am breastfeeding and doing so every 2-3 hours. We do have her on the bottle as well so Jim is able to feed her when I'm teaching dance. She took to it nicely and it hasn't messed with her breastfeeding. We're still working out the feeding kinks (like latching and engorgement), but I seem to remember this took a while with Kelsey as well.
She is definately putting on weight (she weighed 9 lbs 8 oz over a week ago). She's aquired a double chin and her arms and legs are chunking up! She's starting to look like a baby and is definately getting more cute. She still resembles Kelsey quite closely when she was a newborn. It'll be interesting to see how similar they look in a couple months.
I will be happy when we get into some sort of routine (if there is such a thing). I still feel like everything is brand new and I'm constantly questioning everything. But nonetheless, we're happy and healthy and livin' life!

You are my sunshine
At just over 2 1/2, Kelsey has quite a healthy repitoire of songs she likes to sing. They range from Itsy Bitsy Spider, to If You're Happy and You Know It to the theme song from The Little Mermaid. She is very lucky to have a Grandma who enjoys singing, and Kelsey and Grandma spend a lot of time singing together. Here is Kelsey singing one Grandma taught her.
Big Sister Kelsey
Kelsey is very excited (maybe too excited) to be a big sister. She is always wanted to hold, cuddle, sing to, and play with her little sister (did I mention poke, pull and squeeze?). She has a hard time understanding that she must be gentle with and careful around Everly, and she doesn't entirely understand why Everly didn't come into this world able to play with her.
Kelsey has done fairly well with welcoming Everly into our family. She's a little needy for our attention, and has acted out a little, but overall she's done very well and the little bit of negative behaviour we've seen is to be expected. In time, I think she will be a terrific big sister.
